Bios

 

James R. Shay is a partner at Shay Glenn LLP, where he focuses on patent prosecution and innovation counseling with an emphasis on the medical device industry.  He opened the firm with more than two decades of experience in life sciences and technology, most recently from Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati where he headed the medical device patent practice.  Jim also served as President & CEO of First to File, Inc.  Jim was also founder, vice president, and general counsel at Vertis Neuroscience (now Northstar Neuroscience, Inc.), where he focused on intellectual property strategy. Jim spent a year as a consulting entrepreneur at the Mayfield Fund, where he performed intellectual property due diligence on life sciences and other technology companies. Additionally, Jim served as chief legal counsel at Heartstream where he was responsible for all general legal and intellectual property matters, including patent prosecution, major trade secret litigation, employment matters, and distribution and licensing agreements.  Before joining Heartstream, Jim was a partner at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco. He also served as the first in-house patent counsel at Nellcor, Inc.

 

Jim received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1986 and his B.S.E. from Princeton University in 1980. Prior to attending law school, he was a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Jim is admitted to practice in California, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and before the USPTO.

Benjamin Glenn is a partner at Shay Glenn LLP, where he specializes in strategic patents and innovations counseling for medical device start-up companies. He has litigation, patent prosecution and strategic counseling experience, allowing him to assist clients in establishing and protecting valuable intellectual property portfolios within emerging areas of medical device technology. Benjamin primarily advises venture-backed companies and investors in intellectual property matters arising during investment rounds, corporate formation, and throughout the company's product development cycle.

 

Benjamin graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1987, receiving a B.S.E. in mechanical engineering. He served in the United States Navy until 1995, when he joined Applied Materials, Inc. While attending law school at Santa Clara University, Benjamin operated his own patent agent practice, providing patent and counseling services to semiconductor and medical device clients. Before graduating from law school in 2000, Benjamin became a division patent

counsel for Applied Materials. Prior to opening the Shay Glenn LLP, Benjamin was associated with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, and Cooley Godward LLP in the areas of intellectual property litigation and patent prosecution.

Douglas C. Limbach is an attorney at Shay Glenn LLP where he counsels technology companies, primarily in the medical device industry.  Doug entered the field of intellectual property law in 1991 as a patent agent and later an associate at Limbach & Limbach, LLP where he gained experience in patent prosecution, opinion writing, litigation and strategic portfolio management.  He also founded Synchroscan Corporation, a PDA peripheral company, and served as its President and CEO.  Doug later served as Director of Intellectual Property at medical device company TheraSense, and Senior Counsel at Form Factor.  He also was of Counsel at general practice law firm Greenberg Traurig and at life sciences IP firm Bozicevic, Field & Francis.  Prior to entering law, Doug practiced engineering for six years in the fields of automated and medical equipment development.

 

Doug received his J.D. from Golden Gate University in 1995 and his B.S.M.E. from the University of Colorado in 1984.  He is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Rick D. Shoop, Ph.D. is an attorney at Shay Glenn LLP, whose practice focuses on medical devices and biotechnology, although his experience spans electronics and molecular biology.  Rick has experience working with large, mid-sized and start-up companies, providing strategic patent counseling and expertise in prosecution of United States and international patent applications.  He has also worked with venture and corporate investors to analyze medical and biomedical technologies.  Rick joined Shay Glenn LLP after working as an associate in the Palo Alto office of Morrison & Foerster, LLP from 2003 to 2007.  He has relevant patent experience in implantable medical devices, electrosurgical devices, biosensors, diagnostics, surgical tools, fluidic devices, and computer hardware.

 

Dr. Shoop holds a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering from Duke University, where he graduated magna cum laude, with distinction.  He also holds a Masters in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego. His doctoral work in molecular neuroscience examined synaptic formation and localization of neurotransmitter receptors, particularly the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.  As a result of this research, Dr. Shoop is the author of numerous scientific publications.

 

Dr. Shoop received his J.D. degree from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Graduate Fellow of the BoaltCenter for Law and Technology, and was elected into the Order of the Coif.

Tom M. Zlogar is an attorney in the Shay Glenn LLP where he focuses in drafting patent applications, patent prosecution, IP due diligence investigations including freedom to operate and invalidity analyses, and writing non-infringement and invalidity opinions.

 

Prior to joining the Shay Glenn LLP, Tom was an associate in the medical device group at Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati.  He has relevant patent experience in implantable medical devices and diagnostic tools, fluidic devices, and computer hardware.

 

Tom received his J.D. from University of San Francisco where he was a member of the law review.  Tom received a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University.

David C. Cohen, Ph.D. is a patent agent at Shay Glenn LLP.  David worked previously in the Silicon Valley office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP. David earned his Ph.D. in endocrinology and undertook post-doctoral training in cell biology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. David's more than 14 years of experience in academic research and in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries included stints at Genetics Institute (now Wyeth) in Andover, Massachusetts, and Bayer Biotechnology, in Berkeley, California, where he headed biological process development laboratories, and took responsibility for the biology of the mammalian cells used in the large scale manufacture of therapeutic proteins.

In 1998, David changed career direction, studied patent law, and was admitted to the U.S. Patent Bar in 1999. Since then, he has written and prosecuted patents in a wide variety of technologies, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology, hydrogen storage materials, medical devices, glucose sensing technology, and device biocompatibility.
